Now On View: “Camera Work”

The Boca Raton Museum of Art has delved deeply into its collection to put together “Camera Work: Photography from the Permanent Collection.” Slated to be on view for the next two years on the second floor, the show features more than 150 photographs and is named after the magazine Camera Work, published by visionary photographer and galleryist Alfred Stieglitz from 1903 to 1917. The publication championed the idea that photography was indeed art.

According to a release, the installation was deliberately assembled to mix familiar and lesser-known photographers, styles of work and a variety of processes in order to explore ideas about the influence of photographic culture during the last century. The exhibit is divided into four themes: “general history,” “social and documentary,” “modernists between the wars” and “contemporary pluralist directions.”

“Camera Work” spans the history of photography material itself, including anonymous daguerreotypes, delicate albumen prints, antiquated glass lanternslides, silver prints by important twentieth century photographers and contemporary color-saturated prints. There will also be antique cameras and equipment on display.

The museum is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 12–5 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens (65 and older), $4 per person for group tours and $4 for students.
