Summer Day Trip: Stuart

Summer Day Trip: Stuart

In recent years, I’ve been guilty of spending too many summer weekends in my own backyard, or at least in an air-conditioned part of our house where I can see my own backyard. I would justify it by telling the kids we were saving for our big summer trip—hiking in Colorado, rafting in North Carolina, cruising to Mexico. Though there was some truth to that, I probably went to the well with that excuse far too many times.

My son: “Dad, can we go for an ice cream later this afternoon?”

Me: “Not if you want to go swimming with the dolphins in Cancun this summer!!”

This year, however, there is no big summer trip—who can afford one?—and, thus, no excuses for not venturing beyond the backyard. Already, we’re planning a cross-state trip to Captiva Island and an obligatory trek to Orlando. But, closer to home, I’ve penciled in a family day in Stuart. If you haven’t already visited the city’s historic downtown area, do yourself a favor and make the hour-plus drive from Boca. There are dozens of unique shops, plenty of dining options and some July events worth noting.

Each Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the City Hall parking lot is invaded by fresh market dealers offering everything from flowers/plants to produce to baked goods to cheeses—and much more. The next installment of the monthly MusicFest series at Bandstand Park is Friday, July 17, from 5 to 11 p.m. And Sunday, July 19, the RiverWalk stage comes alive with rock music that can be heard up and down the St. Lucie River.

Too hot outside for you? The famed Lyric Theatre is hosting free summer films on its historic big screen—including “The Godfather” trilogy in early August. Here is the upcoming schedule. See you at the movies!

Saturday/Sunday July 11-12: Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo,” 3 p.m.; Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rear Window,” 7 p.m.

Saturday/Sunday, July 25-26: Humphrey Bogart in “The African Queen,” 3 p.m.; “The Maltese Falcon,” 7 p.m.

Saturday/Sunday, Aug. 1-2: “The Godfather II,” noon, “The Godfather I,” 4 p.m.; “The Godfather III,” 7:30 p.m.
