4 New Super Foods
Ask about the following items the next time you visit a health-food store.
Maqui berry: Step aside açai. The Chilean maqui berry is said to be loaded with nearly three times the antioxidants of the beloved Brazilian fruit. And that makes the maqui one of the highest antioxidant concentrated fruits known to man.
Aronia berry: If you’re looking for something high in antioxidants that grows domestically, check out the aronia berry or “black chokeberry.” This tart cousin to the blackberry grows in abundance up North. Higher in antioxidants than blueberries and even pomegranates, the aronia has been a staple in Eastern Europe for ages.
Yerba mate: Get a caffeine kick and added health benefits. Yerba mate, made from the leaves and stems of a rainforest tree, trumps coffee, tea, guarana, and other popular stimulants as a more nutritious boost because of its 24 vitamins and minerals, and many amino acids and antioxidants.
Baobab tree fruit: Grown in several regions of Africa, the coconut-like fruit was recently approved by the FDA to appear as an ingredient in some U.S. foods and beverages. With its high fiber, vitamin C and calcium, and pro-biotic properties, we’re likely to see a lot more of the baobab (pronounced “bay-oh-bab”) in the coming months.
