Do you buy in bulk at warehouse club stores, such as Costco, BJ’s Wholesale or Sam’s Club? Or what about buying larger packages of items in the store because you are under the assumption that buying in bulk saves money? Well, it might just be time to reconsider that line of thinking!

I fully agree that oftentimes, buying in bulk can save a good deal of money. We rarely buy meat anywhere but at a warehouse club store. On occasion, a regular supermarket may have a sale price that is better than the price at the club store.  But lately I’ve been finding that it is really important to compare price per unit of measure. For example, I was purchasing raisins. I hadn’t purchased them in quite a while so I was doing a quick price comparison. I found that the larger package of raisins cost more per ounce than the smaller box. Another recent example was when purchasing flax seed – the larger package cost more per ounce than the smaller one.  I have to wonder if manufacturers have raised prices on larger containers of items because they realize that the larger size that sells more.  It seems reasonable that their cost of packaging would be less since they are putting more in a single container, so raising that price boosts their profit level even higher.  So, it is really important to pay attention to the price per unit of measure when making your purchases.
