Have you ever shopped at produce stands or local farmer’s markets? If so, maybe you’ve already experienced that the value of doing so goes beyond the financial savings.  My husband has been going to a local produce stand lately and finding some great produce at a great price. The food is almost all locally grown, so they don’t have to add in extra cost for shipping products to their store. In addition, we’ve seen a greater variety of produce available and have been trying some items that are new to us.  Most of the produce is picked at peak, rather than being picked green and then being “gassed” for ripeness, so you end up with a much tastier product as well.

As my husband has been reading up on raw foods and health values in our food, we’ve been trying to buy more local products like this. As a result, we are saving money and getting better nutrition.  In order to get the best quality, you need to know which produce is at peak season. I found a helpful calendar here. However, Florida’s weather tends to make some items different. Publix has a helpful section of their website for Florida produce, which can be found here. You can even sign up for email alerts from there.

Another option is to check out your local Green Markets where multiple farmers get together to sell their goods. I found a few locally:

JCC Green Market in Boynton Beach, Florida

410 East Green Market in Boynton Beach, Florida

Delray Green Market in Delray Beach, Florida

Boca Raton Green Market in Boca Raton, Florida

If you’d like to check for Green Markets in other areas, check out LocalHarvest.org.  You can enter your zip code to find locations near you.

Obviously these types of places are not going to accept coupons. But you may find the prices to be better than a traditional store. Or, you may find the quality to be worth the extra price you may pay.

Now on to some other good stuff:

All You Magazine October 2011 Coupon List – Bargain Briana has been kind enough to provide a list of coupons that will be in Walmart’s All You Magazine for October.  You can check it out here to see if you want to stop by and pick up a copy. I believe it retails for $2.49 per issue if you buy it at Walmart, but you can get a subscription for $1.66 per issue here.  However, I will tell you that sometimes the subscription version has less coupons than the newsstand version.
