A couple weeks back I told you about the coming of Red, The Steakhouse, set to open this month in the old Mario’s Cucina spot on Military Trail in Boca. Now we know who the chef de cuisine will be. He’s Jarod Higgins, a native of New England who comes to our little corner of paradise from exec cheffing at Flare Brick Oven Bistro in Rhode Island. Welcome to the nice weather, Jarod.
One of the marks of a civilized dining experience is a menu of fine cheeses, at least IMHO. So here’s a civilized tip of the cheese knife to West Palm’s City Cellar Wine Bar & Grill (700 S. Rosemary Ave., CityPlace, 561/366-0071), which has instituted its own artisanal cheese program with 40 different kinds of luscious, sensual, tantalizing. . . well, you get the idea, under the direction of fromager/cheese-ologist Jeremiah Bennett. If you really want to have fun with curdled milk, check out City Cellar’s "Cheesy Thursdays," when Bennett pairs five cheeses with five different beverage tastes for $30.
Don’t just get happy for an hour, get happy for an entire evening at downtown Boca’s stylish Philippe by Philippe Chow (200 E. Palmetto Park Rd., 561/393-4666), where from 4 to 11 p.m. every Tuesday night you can snarf up $5 appetizers and cocktails. And for those of you with rugrats in tow, Philippe has introduced Family Night Out every Sunday evening. Find food specials for big and little kids alike, plus kid-friendly chopsticks. (Go ahead and use ‘em yourself. . . just pretend you’re showing the tykes the ropes.)
