Part purveyor of upscale DIY burgers and pizzas and part chance at a new life for recovering addicts is the latest addition to the Lake Worth restaurant scene, Moran’s Italian Burger Bistro (2107 10th Ave., North, 561/318-5048).

The brainchild of West Palm Beach psychiatrist Dr. Robert Moran, who also operates the Wellington Retreat addiction treatment clinic, the one-time sports bar turned bistro is a spare but inviting space with lacqured wood tables, tile floor, multiple TVs and killer stone-faced, wood-fired pizza oven.

Though the menu lists a variety of starters and salads, like a wicked-sounding smoked cheese fondue with house-made pretzel and salad of roasted pears, pine nuts and beets, the bulk of the food is made up of Build Your Own Burgers and pizzas.

Burgers come in guises from beef and chicken to kangaroo and local fish, with a half-dozen different choices of bun, and rosters of sauces, cheeses, toppings and premium toppings that can take a burger from plain to plush faster than you can say “ground beef.” Pizzas get the same treatment, with choices of dough, crust, sauce and toppings.

Prices make nice too, with starters and salads from $6 to $8, most burgers from $8 to $10, and pizzas from $10 to $14.
