I’ve worked out all my life, willingly. But my fitness ideals are changing. All these new workout approaches are fascinating and make sense. So, I’m in search of that perfect workout that combines aerobic exercise with muscle building, balance and flexibility.
These three guys might have one solution. Experienced personal trainers Andy Sziraki, Joe Ardagna, Austin Brock opened Slash Fitness (401 N.E. Second St., 561/865-5716, SlashFitPro.com) this past July in Delray Beach. I watched a class and asked them to describe their approach to fitness. I’ve heard good things about the results from their workouts and have seen my daughter’s (she works there) body become stronger and leaner.
Basically, the guys focus on the different results we seek from fitness and combine them into one program:
“We offer personal training that incorporates body definition resistance training (body building for men and body toning for women) and athletic performance training/core training that improve flexibility, coordination and athleticism—all at a pace designed to melt fat off of your body,” Sziraki says.
The facility doesn’t look like a typical gym. It’s more a warehouse space. Sziraki explains their emphasis: The body is the machine. Slash doesn’t use fixed machines or cardio equipment. The trainers hold classes limited to 15 people, involving a mix of old-school bodybuilding, with new-school, functional training (which is core-based strength and movement training).
As a more mature athlete (whatever), I like the idea that the trainers are hands-on, watching people in the classes for correct form and offering alternatives when participants have injuries or weaknesses. And you can’t help but have some fun because the guys are a hoot. It’s almost a side show watching their antics.
“We know when you are having a good day or a bad day, and we will always try to get the most out of you. Also our music is louder than anyone else’s,” Sziraki says.
It’s worth a try for people looking for that perfect fitness approach. The first class is free, according to Ardagna. After that, people pay more a membership fee. In one program, you can have a personal trainer two times a week for less than $100 a month. Not bad, considering what one personal training session might cost.
