Tis the season to get your sparkle on, and just like all good things (read chocolate and holiday damage), the trick is moderation. We’re not a big fan of loud shimmery or glittery ensembles. We prefer to add a touch of it through shoes, scarves or accessories, and our favorite—makeup.

Not sure if you’ve heard or not, but Pantone has pronounced emerald as the color of the year for 2013.  So if you’re shopping for holiday makeup, why not choose fashion-forward hues to match this beautiful shade? We’re thinking blush pinks, lilacs and bold purples. And of course you can still keep your classics.

That’s why we prepared a short list targeting eyes, lips and nails with how-tos!

1. The eyes have it: If you’re a fan of smoky eyes, we recommend glitter instead of the regular grays and silvers. Gold, silver or any metallic hue should do the trick— we love the "Mini Glitter Liner Set" by Sephora, a steal for $15.

We’re also in love with this Laura Mercier Baked Eye Color that can be worn wet or dry. It’s called "the Black Karat".

If you’re wearing a shimmery top or dress, don’t make the eyes too dramatic. We recommend colored eye shadow paled out so there are no clashes. If you’re eyes are doing the talking, lighten up in the lips department to keep things ultra feminine. Prestige Cosmetics also has mineral, shimmer and color compatible trios available. Check out the emerald one since that’s going to be the next “it” color.

2. Luscious lips:  From where we see it, there are only two choices—bold shades or sexy, feminine pastel pouts. It all depends on your outfit for the evening. If you are the minimalist (that we like to be) and don’t want to deviate from that track, the best way to make an impact without being obvious is picking simple colors in clean silhouettes. Then, go for bold lips to complement your outfit.  Have shiny lips if you will, but mattes can be dramatic too. Nars has Andy Warhol inspired glosses and we absolutely love the raspberry one called “Penny Arcade.”

Classicists will rejoice when they see Givenchy’s "Rouge Interdit Satin" Lipstick.   A good choice if you have too much of a sparkly thing going on with your clothes. It keeps things simple.

If you do shiny lips to complement smoky colors, that’s not a bad option. Sephora has a few limited edition gloss sets that can get you a good bang for your buck. We’re loving the Korres’ Volume II set.

3. Nail it: Like cheesy holiday sweaters, you’re allowed to have cheesy holiday nails. Want a Candy Cane mani? See DIY here. Sephora also has a lot of glittery options for the taking. OPI has a good red set for the traditional type.

You can also keep things simple by using Sally Hansen gel strips. They also have the Gem Crush line for different shades of shimmer.

Local beauty store GBS also has a “gold” Zoya gift set available (the top coat is made out of real 18k gold), Butter London "Lips and Tips" set, and some shimmer by Deborah Lippmann.

But do you know which is our absolute favorite? It’s Chanel’s Diwali – we love the subtle gold. Secret Santa, we hope you’re listening!

Happy shopping!
