After narrowing down a pool of more than 100 candidates, the City of Boca Raton has selected Jarad Phelps to serve as chief of police.
The final selection came down to Phelps, who has more than 30 years experience in policing North Carolina and Virginia—including two years as a chief of police in Jacksonville, N.C.—and Nicholas Augustine, a 25-plus year veteran of the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland.
“This was a highly competitive process that brought forward an exceptional group of candidates,” said City Manager Mark Sohaney in a press statement. “Jarad Phelps stood out for his depth of experience, sound judgment, and commitment to public trust. He understands the importance of supporting a high-performing police department and of continuing to build strong relationships with the community it serves.”
Phelps takes over from Seth Dubinsky, who has served as acting chief since Interim Chief Elizabeth Roberts retired in April, who took over for Michele Miuccio, who was fired in March. Phelps brings his experience of overseeing 136 sworn officers and 51 support staff as Jacksonville chief of police to the job, as well as a master’s degree in public administration and extensive executive leadership education from the FBI National Academy, the FBI National Executive Institute, and more.
“I am extremely honored to have been selected as the next Chief of Police for the City of Boca Raton,” Phelps said in a press statement. “To be chosen through such a competitive process is very humbling, and I want to thank to Mr. Sohaney for this tremendous opportunity. I look forward to joining the City team, getting to know the community and the Police Services Department, and working together to serve the residents of Boca Raton.”
Phelps’ start date has not yet been determined. We’ll have more in a later post.
