For most of us, the word doll connotes a child’s plaything or precious collectable, but in Japan, ningy?, meaning “human shaped,” are doll-like forms that serve many different purposes, from talismanic and ritual functions to starring in theatrical dioramas and public performances. While the hina-ningy? associated with the Girl’s Day display and the intensely martial forms associated with the Boy’s Day festival have become familiar to those with at least a passing interest in Japanese culture, few have had the opportunity to be exposed to the rich traditions surrounding ningy? and the theater. Ningy?, both entertaining in and of themselves and commemorative of various theatrical traditions, have been a part of Japanese culture for many centuries. This exhibition presents more than 60 visually stunning and powerfully engaging ningy? exemplifying this little-explored and undiscovered world of Japanese art.Entertaining the Gods and Man: Japanese Dolls and the Theater

Multi-Platinum Selling Rock Band TESLA Coming to Seminole Casino Coconut Creek
Multi-platinum selling rock band TESLA will take the stage at The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. TESLA’s line-up consists of four of its original members: vocalist Jeff Keith, guitarist Frank Hannon, bassist Brian Wheat and drummer Troy Luccketta, plus new guitarist Dave Rude who has brought a fresh energy and creativity to the band. Formed in Sacramento in 1985, the group named itself after the eccentric inventor Nikola Tesla who pioneered the alternating current on which radio was based. Their debut album Mechanical Resonance, produced the crowd favorites “Modern Day Cowboy” and “Little Suzi,” reached the Top 40 on the album charts and eventually went platinum. Their second album The Great Radio Controversy helped solidify the band's growing reputation and fan base. Its first single “Heaven’s Trail (No Way Out)” was a hit that set the stage for their second single sensation, a classic '80s power ballad titled "Love Song," which pushed the album into the Top 20 and double-platinum sales figures. The following year TESLA released Five Man Acoustical Jam, a live album featuring acoustic renditions of hits such as "Comin' Atcha Live," "Gettin' Better," "Modern Day Cowboy" and "Love Song." The album also featured a number of covers, most notably a version of "Signs," which became the band’s highest-charting single. Not only did the album reach the Top 20 and go platinum, it helped to inspire MTV’s Unplugged series, which included artists such as Eric Clapton, Nirvana and many others following suit with live acoustic albums. Psychotic Supper was released in 1991 and it quickly became yet another platinum success and spun off the greatest number of singles of any TESLA album with “Edison’s Medicine,” “Call It What You Want,” “Song and Emotion” and the classic hit “What You Give.” TESLA followed up with Bust a Nut in 1994, selling over 800,000 copies and serving as a testament to the loyal fan base they cultivated. After a break of six years, the band reformed in 2000 and soon after completed a full American reunion tour which also included recording the double live album Replugged Live at various cities. In 2004, TESLA released Into The Now and gave proof that the band from a previous decade was plunging forward into a new era of music and producing a sound that could compete with modern music. The group has since gone on to produce several additional hit albums and tour worldwide. Tickets start at $30* and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. *Additional fees may applyGreen Market @ FAU

Contact between humans and spirits from the afterlife is not as far-fetched as is it seems. Jason Hawes, Steve Gonsalves and the Ghost Hunters team has worked to track down the presence of paranormals across the country. As a leader and co-creator of The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS), a group of fairly ordinary people fearlessly working to understand seemingly unexplainable disturbances, Jason Hawes has made it his life's mission to help anyone with questions pertaining to paranormal phenomena and ghost hunting. Hawes’ own highly personal paranormal experience prompted him to do more than wonder about an afterworld; he launched TAPS from a spare room of his apartment. While Hawes enjoys chasing ghosts, he also loves spending time with his kids, deep-sea fishing and writing screenplays— he has written four sci-fi/thriller stories. Steve Gonsalves is the TAPS technology manager and evidence analyst. It is his responsibility to train all TAPS members on how to use and maintain the team's wide range of high-tech equipment. He also oversees all TAPS investigators, technical advisors and investigators-in-training. Gonsalves has been a public speaker and educator about paranormal phenomena for more than 10 years. He is also the co-founder of the TAPS publication, Paramagazine.Renaisance

Get ready to laugh until it hurts as popular comedian Jim Gaffigan takes the stage at The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 9 p.m. One of the top comics touring today, he consistently sells out multiple nights at huge theaters across the country with his original and entertaining skits. Gaffigan's comedy routines often include humorous, high-pitched "asides" representing commentary on his performance from a hypothetical naive and easily offended audience member. South Floridians can also expect hilarious jokes about being lazy and fast food, as some of his best known and most popular skits are based on America’s obsession with eating. In 2004 Gaffigan’s stand up material was featured in Comedy Central's animated series Shorties Watchin' Shorties. His 2006 album, Beyond the Pale, was accompanied by an hour-long special of the same name on Comedy Central and released on DVD. His 2009 album, King Baby, was also a television special filmed in Austin, Texas at the end of his "The Sexy Tour." Beloved by a wide range of audiences, Gaffigan has achieved many accolades and awards for his stand-up, acting and writing. He is responsible for some of the funniest and most memorable moments in comedy today and has seen huge success with his albums. Gaffigan has also made many appearances on television throughout his career. He was a regular on That ‘70s Show and Ed, a cast member of the TBS original sitcom My Boys, as well as a guest star on HBO’s Flight of the Conchords and on two Law & Order episodes. In addition, he has acted in several films over the years, including Super Troopers, 13 Going On 30, Trust the Man, The Love Guru, 17 Again and many others. He even produced a series of animated shorts for Late Night With Conan O'Brien, titled Pale Force, in which the animated Gaffigan and O'Brien are superheroes who fight crime with their extremely pale skin. Most recently, Gaffigan taped an all-new 75-minute stand-up special Mr. Universe in Washington, D.C. and announced that it would be available online through his website with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Bob Woodruff Foundation, helping veterans and their families. Mr. Universe offers Gaffigan musing, in typical Gaffigan form, about everything from having a fourth child and (not) working out to how fat whales are for animals who constantly ‘work out’ by swimming to fast food outlets of all kinds. Seminole Casino Coconut Creek is offering the chance to “feel the noize” and see the rock and roll phenomenon Quiet Riot at Nectar Lounge FREE on Saturday, October 20 at 9 p.m. The Los Angeles quartet became an overnight sensation thanks to their monster 1983 smash album Metal Health. The American heavy metal band, best known for their hit singles "Metal Health" and "Cum On Feel the Noize," was founded in 1973 by guitarist Randy Rhoads and bassist Kelly Garni. The original line-up featured Rhoads and Garni with lead vocalist Kevin DuBrow and drummer Drew Forsyth. Their current lineup consists of lead vocalist Scott Vokoun, drummer Frankie Banali, bassist Chuck Wright and guitarist Alex Grossi. Quiet Riot began by regularly opening for Van Halen in several local clubs, before either act had a record deal, and the co-influence can be heard between Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen. Metal Health's title track had been released as the album's first single and reached No. 31 on the charts. The song’s success could be attributed to its appearance in the 1984 movie Footloose, as well as its popularity as a heavily-rotated video on MTV. The album stormed up the U.S. charts, duly reaching the number one spot and going platinum five times over in the process at that time. In 1983, Quiet Riot's second single "Cum On Feel the Noize" was released. A cover of the 1973 hit by Slade, the single spent two weeks at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and was the first heavy metal song to make the top five on that chart. The success of the single helped carry the album Metal Health to the top of the Billboard album chart, making it the first American heavy metal debut album to ever reach No. 1 in the U.S. To date, the sales of Metal Health have exceeded the 10 million mark worldwide. Quiet Riot returned to the studio to record 1984's Condition Critical, which went on to sell over 2 million copies in the U.S. and included another chart-ready Slade cover in "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" and the self-penned "Party All Night." The group has since gone on to release several successful albums and tour worldwide, and has been ranked on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock."Get Your Engine Revved Up For Seminole Casino Coconut Creek’s U.S. Drift Circuit
