Spanish River High School Proudly Presents Jabberwock

SPANISH RIVER HIGH SCHOOL PROUDLY PRESENTS JABBERWOCK A Family Comedy Exploring the Mishaps and Eccentricities of Life Take a journey into a life of absurdity and improbability as Spanish River High School proudly presents its fall production of the 1970s comedy Jabberwock, running from November 2nd through November 4th. You’ll laugh your way into the adolescent heart of James ‘Jamie’ Thurber, a famed author and cartoonist, as you relive his memoirs set in the fictional town of Columbus, Ohio during World War I. Written by playwrights Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, this zany and quick-witted script will keep you guessing as Jamie faces unexpected encounters with his hilariously dysfunctional family, yet still manages to find sense and sensibility among it all. Jabberwock is recognized as a family comedy and is sure to keep you laughing and entertained. “Jabberwock is a wonderful story of the adolescent struggle against wit and wisdom,” said Rocco D’Attolico, Program Director of Spanish River High School’s Theatre Arts and Drama Department. “It presents with a large cast of characters which will give each of our students a chance to be a part of this nostalgic play.” Performances begin at 7:00 p.m. on November 2nd and November 3rd,, and at 2:00 p.m. for our Sunday matinee on November 4th at the beautiful state-of-the-art Countess de Hoernle Theatre. The theatre is located on the Spanish River Community High School’s campus at 5100 Jog Road, on the corner of Jog Road and Yamato Road in Boca Raton. Ticket prices are $10.00 for Reserved Seating and may only be purchased online at www.spanishrivertheatre.org. There is free parking onsite and handicapped access is available. For your enjoyment, refreshments will be available at our concession in the lobby before the show and during intermission. For more information, please contact Elena Doxey, Publicity Chair, at 561-271-4767.

Mike Tyson Brings Broadway Show, MIKE TYSON: UNDISPUTED TRUTH, to Seminole Casino Coconut Creek

One of the world’s most powerful sports figures, former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson, will bring his popular Broadway show, MIKE TYSON: UNDISPUTED TRUTH, to The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Saturday, November 10 at 9 p.m. This will be the only performance in Florida, giving fans a special chance to see the show and learn more about the star. MIKE TYSON: UNDISPUTED TRUTH is a rare, personal look inside the life and mind of one of the most complicated men ever to wear the heavyweight belt. Directed by Academy Award nominee Spike Lee, this riveting one man show goes beyond the headlines, behind the scenes and between the lines to deliver a must-see theatrical knockout. For nearly three decades, Tyson has been a legend both in and out of the ring. Tenacious, talented and thrilling to watch, Tyson embodies the wit and flair of a truly larger-than-life personality. With nicknames like “Iron Mike,” “Kid Dynamite,” and “The Baddest Man on the Planet,” it’s no surprise that Tyson was once the most feared fighter in all of boxing. He won his first 19 professional bouts by knockout, 12 of them in the first round, and one look at the long list of his victories and accomplishments is all that it takes to see that Tyson is one of boxing’s all-time greats. While most fans know that he was once the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, few realize that before Tyson, no boxer had ever won the three biggest belts in prizefighting – the World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation world heavyweight titles. He holds the record as the youngest boxer to achieve that feat at the age of 20, and none, besides Tyson, have ever owned them simultaneously. Throughout his career, Tyson became well known for his fierce and daunting boxing style. He was ranked No. 16 on Ring Magazine's list of “100 Greatest Punchers of All Time” and No. 1 in the ESPN.com list of "The Hardest Hitters in Heavyweight History." He has also been inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame as well as the World Boxing Hall of Fame. Tickets start at $145* and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. *Additional fees may apply About Seminole Casino Coconut Creek The all-new Seminole Casino Coconut Creek is South Florida’s hottest place to play. With its recent $150 million expansion, the entertainment destination now features 65 table games of live Blackjack, Baccarat, Pai Gow Poker, Let it Ride and Spanish 21 plus a High-Limit area and lounge on a 100,000-square-foot casino floor. Ranked 30th in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time," Guy is known for his showmanship on stage – playing his guitar with drumsticks or strolling into the audience while playing solos. Fans at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek can expect to hear favorites like “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Damn Right I’ve Got the Blues,” “Mustang Sally,” “Feels Like Rain” and "Stone Crazy," which was ranked 78th in Rolling Stone's list of the “100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time.” Critically acclaimed, Guy is a pioneer of the Chicago blues sound and has served as an influence to some of the most notable musicians of his generation, including Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. In the 1960s Guy was a member of Muddy Waters' band and was a house guitarist at Chess Records. He can be heard on Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" and Koko Taylor's "Wang Dang Doodle" as well as on his own Chess sides and the fine series of records he made with harmonica player Junior Wells. Jonny Lang is a Grammy Award-winning American blues, gospel and rock singer, songwriter, guitarist and recording artist. Lang's music is notable for both his unusual voice, which has been compared to that of a 40-year-old blues veteran, and for his guitar solos. His solo patterns have especially been noted for his frequent use of wide vibratos. In more than ten years on the road, Lang has toured with the Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy, Aerosmith, B.B. King, Blues Traveler, Jeff Beck and Sting. In 1999, he was invited to play for a White House audience including President and Mrs. Clinton. Lang also made a cameo appearance in the film Blues Brothers 2000 as a janitor. In addition, Lang appears regularly as a part of the Experience Hendrix Tour along with many other well-known guitarists to pay tribute the deceased guitar legend Jimi Hendrix. Tickets start at $70* and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. *Additional fees may apply

Seminole Casino Coconut Creek Unveils Designated Parking Spaces for Disabled American Veterans

Just one week after Veteran’s Day was observed across the nation, Seminole Casino Coconut Creek is proud to unveil special designated parking areas for Disabled American Veterans (DAV) on Monday, November 19 at 10 a.m. The covered parking spaces will be located on the third level of the new environmentally friendly garage featuring solar energy and green technology. The ceremony will include several special guest speakers, including Broward County Commissioner Chip LaMarca, DAV of Vietnam and former Commander Chapter 133 Chuck McLaughlin, as well as the man whose life inspired the best-selling book and Academy Award-winning film “Black Hawk Down,” Michael Durant. Following the heartfelt presentation, the award-winning Fresh Harvest will provide a mouthwatering and nutritious meal to numerous invited veterans in gratitude of their patriotism and service. Durant served in the United States Army 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment Airborne, known as the “Night Stalkers,” and was the pilot of a Black Hawk helicopter that was fired upon and subsequently crashed during a combat operation in Somalia in 1993. After a street battle, he was captured and held prisoner for 11 days and was badly injured. The events were recounted in Mark Bowden’s book “Black Hawk Down” and Ridley Scott’s movie of the same name. Durant has since turned his experiences into a powerful story of survival and inspiration for all as a renowned speaker and New York Times best-selling author of “In the Company of Heroes” and “The Night Stalkers.” “Seminole Casino Coconut Creek is committed to supporting and giving back to those who have served our country,” said Steve Bonner, President of Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. “There are many veterans in our community, and we are proud to dedicate these special parking spaces solely to them in honor of their service.” The 1.2 million-member DAV is a non-profit 501(c)(4) charity dedicated to building better lives for America’s disabled veterans and their families. The DAV was founded in 1920 by disabled veterans returning from World War I to represent their unique interests. The DAV’s Voluntary Services Program operates a comprehensive network of volunteers who provide veterans free rides to and from medical facilities and improve care and morale for sick and disabled veterans. DAV members provide grassroots advocacy and services in communities nationwide. From educating lawmakers and the public about important issues, to supporting services and legislation to help disabled veterans, the DAV is there to promote its message of hope to all who have served and sacrificed. Women's Minyan

"Women's Minyan" ran for sold out audiences for over 5 years in Israel. Last year the popular play also sold out to standing room audiences in Boca Raton. The play is also gearing up for a major New York run according to the producers of One Circle Productions. "Women's Minyan" is the true story of an ultra-orthodox Rabbi's wife and mother of twelve prevented from seeing her children after she leaves the community under bizarre and horrific circumstances. The play brings together New York Director Shari Upbin and her daughter Rabbi Danielle Upbin of Congregation Beth Shalom in Pinellas County. Rabbi Upbin is serving as Rabbinical consultant of the piece. The story is set in Meah Shearim in Israel. Director Upbin says she's thrilled to be directing the work in South Florida and has high praise for Naomi Ragen, the author of the play. "Ms. Ragen has been a tireless advocate for women's rights in Israel, said Upbin. She's fought against gender segregation on Israeli busses and bias in rabbinical courts. I hope theatre goers are inspired and empowered by the play's powerful message." Upbin said Ragen emailed her with words of encouragement for this year's South Florida run. Theatre Maven Shari Upbin recently directed the award-winning comedy "Confessions of a Jewish Shiksa."

BANNED… NOW AND THEN – DISCUSSIONS OF FOUR BANNED BOOKS

The Hunger Games Trilogy, The Harry Potter Series, The Great Gatsby and A Farewell to Arms all have something in common – they are banned books. Come and learn why, and get involved in the discussion at “Banned... Now and Then.” Facilitators will present these four books in lively interactive dialogues which will cover some of their key messages and why they were banned. Guests are encouraged to bring a “brown bag” lunch and beverages and delicious desserts will be served. Presented by The West Palm Beach Library Foundation, this special event is part of Banned and Burned: Literary Censorship and the Loss of Freedom, an emotional and unforgettable series of events that will feature the traveling exhibition, Fighting the Fires of Hate: America and the Nazi Book Burnings from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The eight-week presentation provides a vivid look at the first steps the Nazis took to suppress freedom of expression, and the strong response from the United States. Viewing of the documentary "Paper Clips"

The West Palm Beach Library Foundation presents a viewing of the family-friendly, award-winning documentary Paper Clips (rated G, 82 minutes). Struggling to grasp the concept of six million Holocaust victims, the film details how middle school students in a rural Tennessee town studied the tragedy in a unique way. With messages about tolerance and diversity, it offers valuable perspectives on learning about other cultures, history and crimes against humanity. Following the film and discussion, light refreshments will be served. The presentation is part of Banned and Burned: Literary Censorship and the Loss of Freedom, an emotional and unforgettable series of events that will feature the traveling exhibition, Fighting the Fires of Hate: America and the Nazi Book Burnings from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
