The West Palm Beach Library Foundation will host Palm Beach Dramaworks as they present My Books, Banned and Burned, a theatrical performance where actors will portray Ernest Hemingway, Helen Keller and other acclaimed authors whose books were burned in 1933 by university students in Nazi Germany. The burning of books soon became the symbolic foreshadowing of German-Jewish writer Heinrich Heine’s 19th century warning, “Where one burns books, one soon burns people.” Staged by Palm Beach Dramaworks resident director J. Barry Lewis. This presentation is part of Banned and Burned: Literary Censorship and the Loss of Freedom, an emotional and unforgettable series of events that will feature the traveling exhibition, Fighting the Fires of Hate: America and the Nazi Book Burnings from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The eight-week presentation runs through January 6, 2013 and provides a vivid look at the first steps the Nazis took to suppress freedom of expression, and the strong response from the United States. ExerScience at the South Florida Science Museum
Attention all moms… Stick to those New Year’s resolutions by attending a weekly Saturday Zumba class at the South Florida Science Museum. The added benefit is that while you burn off those holiday cookies, your young scientist can enjoy a fun and interactive science program. This new “burn and learn” concept is sure to satisfy all parties involved. Additional perks include admission to the Museum, top notch science instruction, a Health Science nutritional guide and a Subway coupon toward “eating fresh.” “This isn’t a typical set-up where mom goes to the gym and her child is babysat with video games or a movie,” said Kate Arrizza, Chief Operating Officer for the SFSM. “Parents can rest assured they are doing something good for themselves and their child – the perfect multi-tasking parenting solution! While mom (or dad) is getting fit, their child will be performing science labs, learning about new constellations in the planetarium, or getting up close and personal with the sea animals in our touch tank – and with kids their own age. After class, kids can take mom or dad on a tour of the museum to explore more about what they just experienced, and even stay for lunch at the Museum’s Subway shop. We think it will make for a great Saturday morning tradition where everyone wins!”Three Dog Night to Bring “Joy to the World” at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek
Three Dog Night, one of the most successful American bands of the ‘60s and ‘70s, will bring “joy to the world” on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 8 p.m. at The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek. Founding members and vocalists Cory Wells and Danny Hutton, original keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon and guitarist Michael Allsup, as well as bassist Paul Kingery and drummer Pat Bautz will perform their beloved hits, plus some amazing new songs, sure to be enjoyed by South Florida Fans of all ages. With their distinctive and sometimes extraordinary harmonic blend, the group became a sensation and their hits appeared on best-selling charts in multiple genres, including pop, rock and country. Boasting chart and sales records that are virtually unmatched in popular music, Three Dog Night had an impressive 21 consecutive Billboard Top 40 hits, including three number one singles, "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)," which was also a Top 10 hit in the United Kingdom, "Joy to the World," and "Black and White." Coincidentally, each one featured a different lead singer. Three Dog Nights’ version of John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s ‘'It’s For You’' typified the band at their best, but it was their original arrangements of the work of lesser-known writers that brought welcome exposure and considerable royalties to fresh talent. The group recorded the music of the best new songwriters of their time, including Harry Nilsson ("One"), Randy Newman ("Mama Told Me (Not to Come)"), Elton John (“Lady Samantha” and “Your Song”), Laura Nyro ("Eli's Coming"), Paul Williams (“An Old Fashioned Love Song”) and Hoyt Axton ("Joy to the World") among many others. The band was noted for its creative arrangements and interpretations, and their cover choices gave exposure to several of these talented songwriters. As they mark more than 40 years of extraordinary music and touring on the road, Three Dog Nights’ records continue to sell around the world, reaching beyond the borders of the U.S. into Japan, Canada, Holland, England, Germany, Spain and more. Tickets start at $40* and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. *Additional fees may applyThe Policemen's Ball

A singer turned soap opera star turned singer, Springfield was born in Australia and moved a great deal with his military family throughout Australia and the United States. In 1968, he joined the band Zoot, which became one of the most popular groups in Australia. He later went solo in 1971 and garnered his first U.S. success the following year with a recording of “Speak to the Sky.” The song reached number 14 in the U.S. In between album recordings, Springfield began acting on General Hospital. His popularity skyrocketed, setting the stage for the release of Working Class Dog in 1981. Powered by the classic single “Jessie’s Girl,” which eventually hit the top of the charts, and the Top Ten follow-up “I’ve Done Everything for You,” Working Class Dog was a smash success. Springfield was awarded a Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal for “Jessie’s Girl.” Springfield eventually returned to his first love of music when concerts conflicted with his television career. The follow-up album, Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet, was released in 1982, spawning the Top Ten smash “Don’t Talk to Strangers.” In 1983, he released Living in Oz, which also went platinum with the Top Ten “Affair of the Heart” and “Human Touch.” Springfield made the leap to the big screen in 1984 with Hard to Hold, and the soundtrack spawned his Top Ten hit “Love Somebody.” He has continued to record albums from the ‘80s through the present. His latest album, released in 2012, is titled Songs for the End of the World. With more than 25 million albums sold and 17 top 40 hits, Springfield continues to perform for fans worldwide. The New York based band focuses on making every show an authentic Floydian experience for their fans. Known for performing a diverse mix of The Floyd’s extensive 16-album repertoire, complete with faithful renditions of popular hits as well as obscure gems, The Machine’s stellar musicianship, dramatic lighting and video, and their passionate delivery sets them above and beyond the rest. In the classic tradition, The Machine explores collective improvisation paralleling and even rivaling that of an early 1970s Pink Floyd mentality. Their use of expanded theatrical elements and elaborate stage displays continues in the spirit of the later Floyd lineups of the 1980s. The band is also known for recreating entire albums as a part of their show, accepting requests from fans, and for taking an A to Z approach in which one song is played for every letter of the alphabet. Additionally, the quartet has been sharing the stage with full symphony orchestras, including the Atlanta, Detroit, Pittsburgh and San Diego Symphonies. Over the years, The Machine has touched the hearts and souls of many, selling out theaters, large clubs and casinos across North and Central America, Europe and Asia. They have also appeared at renowned music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Riverbend, Gathering of the Vibes, Buffalo's Artpark and Germany’s Rock of Ages.
