GBS' Dump The Junk Campaign

GBS The Beauty Store is helping to give a little beauty back to the community! In an effort to promote the recycling of unloved beauty appliances, including hair dryers and straightening tools, GBS is offering those who “dump the junk” at one of GBS The Beauty store’s six locations, $25 towards a new professional styling tool “trade-up”. In exchange for a donation of a used styling tool, GBS customers will receive a generous $25 towards a new professional styling tool from HAI, including the new Neo Styling Iron, the first flat iron with complete damage control technology that enhances natural body without creating dull, flat locks, and the 3300 Tourmaline Dryer which produces more negative ions than any other dryer on the market, deceasing frizz and overall drying time. Customer’s “trade-in” styling tools must be in working condition and will only be eligible for same category trades (flat iron for flat iron or dryer for dryer). GBS will donate the gently used styling tools to Women in Distress of Broward County, the only nationally accredited, state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving Broward County. The organization offers 24-hour crisis intervention through a hotline and emergency shelter, as well as counseling and support for victims and their children.

Legendary Country Crooner George Jones Coming to Seminole Casino Coconut Creek

One of country music’s giants, George Jones, is bringing his unparalleled voice to The Pavilion at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Saturday, February 9 at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale on Thursday, December 13, 2012. With a run of songs extending from the 1950s into the 21st century, Jones has had a whopping 143 Top 40 country hits and is frequently referred to as the greatest living country singer. He was a co-writer on his first chart hit, 1955’s “Why Baby Why,” and in the ‘60s recorded hundreds of songs including the number one classics “Tender Years,” “She Thinks I Still Care,” “Walk Through This World With Me” as well as more ephemeral fare like “Love Bug.” Jones paired up with producer Billy Sherrill in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and their work together exemplified the lusciously string-drenched style known as “country-politan.” In the years that followed, he racked up hit after iconic hit, including “A Good Year for the Roses,” “The Grand Tour,” “I Always Get Lucky With You” and “If Drinkin’ Don’t Kill Me (Her Memory Will).” One 1980s smash in particular, “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” became widely regarded as the greatest country single of all time. He has received the four highest honors that can be granted to anyone in his line of work, starting with his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1992. A decade later, the president bestowed the National Medal of Arts upon him, and he was saluted by the Kennedy Center Honors in 2008. In early 2012, Jones was presented another top honor as he received the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Approximately 56 years after being named the Most Promising New Country Vocalist of 1956, Jones still lives out that promise with a regular touring routine. Audiences flock to hear the voice that is country’s most indescribable as well as, by acclamation, its finest. Tickets start at $70* and are available at www.ticketmaster.com. *Additional fees may apply

New Exhibit! The Curator’s Farewell Exhibition: Cool Stuff from the Morikami Museum’s Collection

Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens’ cultural director Tom Gregersen will be stepping down from full-time exhibit curating and cultural guidance of the organization after 35 years of service. Before he says “Sayonara,” however, he would like to share some favorite objects from the museum’s treasure vault with the audience that has graciously supported his efforts over the decades. From art to unusual objects of everyday living, this exhibition will explore the meaning of each object and what it has to say to Gregersen about Japan, while presenting the personal stories of adventure and triumph that lie behind them all. Some objects will be seen for the first time, while others are old friends. All reveal a culture that is dynamic, design-conscious, and imaginative.

Witness to History: Americans Abroad in Hitler's Europe

In order to understand why the Holocaust happened, it is vital to study the 1920’s and 1930’s, the years when the Holocaust could have been prevented. Join us for an intimate discussion with Andrew Nagorski, author of Hitlerland: American Eyewitnesses to the Nazi Rise to Power and Arthur Berger, Senior Advisor at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, for a compelling glimpse of that period from the perspective of the fascinating array of Americans who lived and worked in Berlin during Hitler's rise to power. Accompanied by rarely seen archival footage from the Museum's collections, this eye-opening account offers a totally new perspective not only on what was known, but also on what actions might have been taken to stop Germany’s domination of Europe and, ultimately, the Holocaust.

BaconFest FL 2013 at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek

Making its debut in the Sunshine State, the 2013 BaconFest Florida, hosted by Chef Todd Fischer from Discovery’s Destination America network show, ‘United States of Bacon,’ will take place at Seminole Casino Coconut Creek on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 6 p.m. This event will feature performances by The Bacon Brothers and The Dan Band with frontman Dan Finnerty, who is most recognized as the wedding singer from Old School. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com. BaconFest has become a highly popular event held annually in cities such as Chicago, New York, and Kansas City. This outdoor concert will be a bacon-lover’s paradise, filled with free food sampling from a variety of vendors offering a bacon-inspired twist on fare from 20 South Florida restaurants. BaconFest will also feature a chef throw down competition with celebrity judges for the best bacon recipes in two categories – ‘Sweet’ and ‘Savory’, as well as a number of fun bacon-related activities. Festival-goers will also enjoy carnival games and a ‘Hog’ bike show. Tickets include all the delicious indulgences you can eat, with drinks available for purchase. Fans can follow all the updates on Twitter via #BaconFestFL. The Seminole Casino Coconut Creek is opening the event to restaurants/catering companies to participate in this event, with something ‘savory’ or ‘sweet’ made with bacon. Participants will be provided with bacon with which to create their BaconFest fare. For information on how to participate, email info@thebuzzagency.net. Fittingly, Kevin and Michael Bacon, known as The Bacon Brothers, will headline the evening and perform some of their greatest hits. Long before Kevin launched his prolific stage and screen career, and before Michael became known as a go-to composer for film and television, they were just two brothers from Philadelphia born nine years apart. Now, The Bacon Brothers have celebrated over 17 years as a band and released six albums laden with their trademark gritty rock and a touch of Philly soul. Their most recent album, New Year’s Day, kicks off with its title track that draws upon Kevin’s experiences but is not directly about him. The infectious second track “Go My Way,” with its laid back, shuffling soulful groove, was also written from a character’s perspective. Having played with the same crew of musicians for all of the band’s existence, the brothers agree that the band is just as much a part of the whole endeavor as the two frontmen. In fact, each member of the band produced a couple tracks each for New Year’s Day. The Dan Band, a comedy band from Los Angeles created by actor and comedian Dan Finnerty, will also be on hand to entertain the crowd. Finnerty caught America’s attention as the foul-mouthed wedding singer in the hit film Old School, performing his now-infamous rendition of “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” as well as his other appearances in Todd Phillips’ movies Starsky & Hutch and The Hangover. What started as a joke for Finnerty singing “I Am Woman” at a karaoke bar has spiraled out of control into The Dan Band – a cult hit that has garnered rave reviews from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Variety, Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly. Their TV concert special “The Dan Band: I Am Woman” was executive produced by Steven Spielberg, and the group has appeared on numerous television shows such as Jimmy Kimmel Live, Ellen, The Tonight Show, Last Call with Carson Daly and many more. The Dan Band plays to sold out crowds across the country and has released two albums, The Dan Band Live followed by Ho – A Dan Band X-Mas, and is currently working on a third with Comedy Central Records titled The Wedding Album. BaconFest Florida is strictly for guests age 21 and over. Tickets start at $25* and are available at http://www.ticketmaster.com/Baconfest-Florida-tickets/artist/1813999. *Additional fees may apply.

Basics of Sushi

Sushi has entered the American palate as a cultural influence from Japan. But do you know what sushi is? (Hint: it’s not raw fish, but rather rice made with a bit of vinegar and sugar.) Served with a variety of accompaniments, including cooked or raw fish and vegetables, it can take many forms. Take a lesson in a hands-on workshop in the basics of sushi with Mitsutoshi Sekita, sushi chef from a Japanese restaurant in Plantation, Fla. Learn how to make sushi, cultural information about sushi and, of course, enjoy eating it! Materials: bring a sharp 7-8 inch knife, a cutting board approximately 10” x 15”, an apron and a dish towel.
