Despite a restaurant scene that seems to get better and more diverse every day, South Florida didn’t place a single chef, restaurateur or restaurant in the finals of the 2014 James Beard awards.
Even the semifinals couldn’t show us much love, with only Michael Schwartz making the semi list for Outstanding Chef and the Broken Shaker in Miami Beach earning a nod for Outstanding Bar Program. Last year, at least Jeff McInnis, late of Yardbird in SoBe and Hedy Goldsmith of the Michael’s Genuine group made it to the finals.
The winners of this year’s awards will be announced in NYC in early May but frankly, we’ll probably be out to dinner at one of our fine—and overlooked—restaurants.
