Driving a Formula R/T 2000 race car was not on my “bucket list,” but when the opportunity presented itself, I was game to give it a try.
On an early Saturday morning, I arrived at the Palm Beach International Raceway ready to channel my inner Danica Patrick under the expert guidance of several instructors from the Bertil Roos Racing School. Admittedly, I was tempted to chicken out, but my type A personality (and pride) got the better of me and I was along for the ride.
Thirteen other participants joined the session, including a father-son pair celebrating a milestone birthday. In a classroom environment, we were given a detailed overview of the race track and the race car which boasts a high-powered fuel injected engine with a 5-speed sequential transmission.

Finally, it was time to put the metal to the pedal (pun intended). You truly have to experience it for yourself, so I’ll skip the details, but my 40 minutes of fast driving was exhilarating.
Getting behind the wheel, all suited up, the engine revving, the adrenaline in full gear, and going at speeds that aren’t advisable while turning at 10 different axis points, was well worth the early morning wake up call.
It’s an experience I highly recommend gets added to everyone’s wish list. It’s also a great gift idea, especially for the adrenaline junkies. Plus, the racing school is launching its Winter Series in October, going on through February 2019.
If anything, for just a few hours, your cool factor definitely goes up a notch.
