Yesterday’s 9th annual prayer breakfast for the YMCA of South Palm Beach County was a marvelous event for an equally marvelous and dedicated organization.
The Y touches many people in our county both young and old – both of our children learned to swim there. The keynote speaker was the legendary Bobby Bowden, the 81 year old former head coach at Florida State University.
He delighted the breakfast’s guests with anecdotes about his coaching days that date back to the 1950’s– including leading the Seminoles from 1976 to 2009. His main message had the overtone of a father speaking to his son. He told the crowd to rebuild the family unit. He urged all fathers to become more involved with their kids – something he suggested was sorely missing in today’s society.
FAU Head Football Coach, Howard Schnellenberger, introduced Bowden and both poked fun at one another. It was fun to see two terrific men taking part in this breakfast that has become a meaningful event to mark on your calendar every year.
