Boca Raton earned the Florida Magazine Association’s highest honor—first place in the Best Overall category—at the organization’s annual award ceremony Saturday night at Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resorts in Lake Buena Vista. It marked an unprecedented 10th consecutive year that Boca Raton has been a finalist for this category in its circulation bracket (20,000 to 50,000)—and it represented the fourth time in five years that Boca has won the prestigious Charlie Award as Best Overall publication.
But that wasn’t the only good news for our company’s publications:
• Boca Raton also won the Charlie Award for Best Photographic Essay (in any circulation category) for “Visions of Havana,” a pictorial by Tommy Morrison in our February 2012 issue that gave readers a rare glimpse inside Cuba.
• One year after winning a Charlie Award for Best New Magazine, Delray Beachearned a Charlie for Best Feature in its circulation category (20,000 or under) for the story “Crossing Swinton” by Rich Pollack. The feature, which appeared in the November/December 2011 issue, examined the early days of desegregation in Delray.
• Our website, www.bocamag.com, won the Silver Award for Best Overall Online Presence.
• Boca Raton also captured a Silver Award for Best Use of Photography in its circulation category.
• And, finally, Boca Raton won a Bronze Award for Best In-Depth Reporting in its circulation category for “Sex Trafficking in South Florida” by Lisa Lucas, which appeared in the November 2011 issue. That same story was honored earlier this year by the South Florida chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists.
