Chic & The City: Saks Debuts Men’s Store

Chic & The City, Vol. 5

Gentlemen, it’s time to suit up for high season—and Saks Fifth Avenue inside Town Center at Boca Raton has just the place to do so. With the store celebrating the grand opening of its newly renovated men’s department, including a special invitation-only event on Nov. 21, we felt compelled to reach out to Saks VP and men’s fashion director Eric Jennings for some dapper advice.

Jennings, in town for the launch party, curates the best of the best trends from London, Milan and Paris, and he brings the heady mix to Saks stores across the country—including at Town Center. Here are some of his invaluable tips for a suave season.

For the Holidays

1.  The evening jacket:  “This is an alternative to a tuxedo or suit when dressing up for a special occasion.  It’s a dressy sport-coat, often in a silk jacquard with contrast lapels. Sand and Versace have some beautiful options in this arena for the holidays.”

2.  The lapel pin:  “We have amazing lapel flowers in metallic leather made exclusively for Saks by Hook + Albert.  This is a great way to differentiate your look when dressing up for a holiday party.”

3.  The Sporty Watch: “An easy way to add a pop of color to your look.  Check out Movado’s rubber-band watches in an array of fun colors.”

4.  The Waterproof Driver:  “Swims brings us the functionality of a water-shoe with the aesthetic of a stylish driver. We have a wide array of colors, some of which are exclusive to Saks.  Slip them on with a pair of shorts and you can go from the pool to a day out on the town.”

5.  The Nautical Bracelet: “Check out Miansai for colorful wrap bracelets in leather or rope that fasten with either a hook or anchor in silver, brass, or rose gold. It’s meant to be layered on the same wrist as your watch or with other bracelets.”

The Wall Street Journal recently ran article that the tie is dead. Is it?

Jennings: “The tie will never go away. What’s changed is the perception that you have to wear a tie in order to look dressed up or professional. While that is no longer the case, many men elect to wear a tie, as it’s yet another way in which to express personal style.

There’s a vast array of neckwear in the market now for men to choose from. There are casual ties in seasonal fabrications or statement ties in precious fabrications like lace, mink, and peacock feathers.

We’ve recently launched three very exciting neckwear brands in the latter category that have received a tremendous response: Monsieur Jean Yves, Title of Work, and Marwood.  Take one look at these three brands, and you’ll see that the tie is here to stay.”

Weather is a big differentiator when it comes to clothing in South Florida. Any tips for the guys here?

Jennings: “For both fall and holiday, our South Florida store looks much different from New York and our other Northern [businesses].  In South Florida, we focus on lightweight fabrics and brighter colors.

Don’t be afraid to go sockless when sporting a pair of drivers or loafers.  If you’re worried about sweaty feet, try a pair of ped socks from Falke or Marcoliani. They won’t show, so you’ll achieve the sockless look without having to forfeit the sock.

Try a pair of colored frames when you purchase your next pair of sunglasses.  It doesn’t always have to be black or brown.

Invest in some lightweight leather.  Lightweight leather jackets are season-less and something we’ve recently seen a ton of in the market from both classic and contemporary brands. You won’t believe how light leather can feel until you try it on.
