Location
Boynton Beach Community High School
Description
AVDA (Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse) will co-host the Statewide Youth Activism Summit to help prevent domestic and dating violence, in conjunction with the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The summit will take place on March 4th, 2017, from 9am-4:30pm at Boynton Beach Community High School, 4975 Park Ridge Blvd, Boynton Beach, FL 33426. The event is free and open to the public.
The Youth Activism Summit, which had been held in Orlando for a number of years, will be held in Palm Beach County for the first time ever. This year’s keynote speaker is Byron Hurt, an award-winning documentary filmmaker, published writer, anti-sexist activist, and lecturer. He is also the former host of the Emmy-nominated television show, REEL WORKS with BYRON HURT.
Since 1993, Hurt has been using his craft, his voice, and his writings to broaden and deepen how people think about gender, race, sex, violence, music, and visual media. As an activist, Byron has served as a gender violence prevention educator. The former Northeastern University football quarterback was also a founding member of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program, the leading college-based rape and domestic violence prevention initiative for college and professional athletics. Hurt also served as an Associate Director of the first gender violence prevention program in the United States Marine Corps.
In addition to a variety of presenters, there will be activities for young people to participate in throughout the day that will focus on preventing dating violence and building healthy relationships. The Summit will include workshops and performances, as well as lunch.
The event is FREE. Young people and adults are welcome. For more information, contact Emil Rudicell at Rudicell_Emil@FCADV.org or call 850.425.2749. Free registration online at: http://fcadv.org/events/youth-summit-2017-prevention-action.
