Musical Innovations from the Baroque to the Romantic Periods.

Session II: January 24, 31; February 7, 14, 21, 28; March 7, 14, 21, 28

Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Explore the innovations in musical theory and instruments, as well as the inspirations and the artists, that brought the world of music from the Baroque and Classical periods to the 19th century.

Opening with the music of Vivaldi, Rameau, and the Bach family, the course will review the development of style and form and the social reasons for their changes. The course continues through to the birth of the symphony at the time of Mozart and Beethoven to the great orchestral works of the Romantic period.

Throughout the course, we will describe the new instruments developed to play the music of each period, such as the improved violin, the clarinet, the keyed trumpet and the ensemble, as well as the concert hall, the grand piano, and music as we hear it today.

Juliette de Marcellus is a pianist, prize-winning music critic and lecturer. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music in London and with professor Leonie Gombrich at Oxford.
