Florida Popstar Meresha Explores New Dimensions of Music

Singer, songwriter, DJ and producer Meresha is bringing an extraterrestrial touch to pop music. The innovator of “AlienPop” (described as being “like pop, but somehow also out of this world” on her website bio) has amassed an international following with her deep, soulful voice and catchy pop lyrics that are given an ethereal quality from out-of-this world instrumentals.

Born in Warsaw, Poland and relocating to Florida at the age of 15, Meresha has been crafting her spacey sound professionally for nearly 10 years. Now a Billboard-charting artist and performer at several music festivals including SunFest, the seed for her blossoming music career was planted at her first concert when she was 10 years old and saw the Black-Eyed Peas in Warsaw.

“I just fell in love with what Fergie and Will.I.Am were doing onstage. How they were connecting with each other and the audience and the performance they were doing was very captivating to me. From that moment I knew that that’s what I wanted to do,” says Meresha.

It wasn’t long after that she started writing her own music. She would play the sounds she imagined on plastic Guitar Hero instruments, pretending she could hear every note, and then she would perform for her family. At 12 years old, while she was on holiday with her family in Florida, she recorded a rough cut of her first single, “Fool Don’t Be” in the CD booth of a local mall. Soon, her ambitions grew bigger than Warsaw and her family moved near West Palm Beach, in part so that she could pursue a career in music.

“I had this really big drive at the time but I felt like I needed to go there [to Florida] in order to have my musical dreams come true,” she says.

When her family relocated, Meresha was a sophomore in high school. She says that her life changed drastically after landing in this new environment with all of her friends thousands of miles away. “It was not an easy age to make friends,” she says, and she decided to use all of the time on her hands to produce music in her room. “Everyday I was just going at it and I became really passionate about it and then I would play it to my entire family.”

Meresha says that her distinctive sound is inspired from the many cultures that she’s encountered in her travels and the connection she feels with outer space. “All throughout my life I feel like I never really fit in to a certain area on this planet,” says Meresha. She felt she belonged amongst the stars. Even as a child, she believed that one day her alien family would swoop down from the sky and take her home. Always an active imaginer, she still finds herself waking up in the middle of the night singing songs that come to her in dreams.

This connection with the extraterrestrial and her love of foreign culture has given her music what she calls a “world flavor.” She has even released a single, “Juntos,” sang entirely in Spanish. The “world flavor” of Meresha’s music has garnered a international attention and earned her several awards, from winning MTV’s Freshman Competition to AllMusic naming her 2017 EP “Into the Dreamland” a Top 20 Album of the Year.

Currently, Meresha has been playing shows in renowned rising music venues from the famous Hotel Café in Los Angeles to the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn. She is also gearing up for a tour along the East Coast planned for later this year. Until then, catch Meresha playing her interdimensional grooves at Crazy Uncle Mike’s in Boca on Saturday, Aug. 20 and be on the lookout for her new single, “Greatest Time,” releasing this Friday.
