It’s hot out. So hot. And we still have at least three months of Florida summer left and young children to entertain. School started this week for much of Palm Beach County, but if you have a child who’s not yet in the classroom, you’re probably scouring the web for events and things to do this month that don’t take place under the scorching sun. Luckily, we have you covered with a few fun ideas for you and your family.
Here are three unique ways to enjoy August locally with your Boca kids!
Free admission for kids at the Palm Beach Zoo
Through August 31
August is a great time to visit Palm Beach Zoo’s winding shaded pathways to discover hundreds of rare and endangered animals. And the best part is that admission is FREE for kids this month! The carousel and Lorikeet Loft feeding aviary are now open each day starting at 10:00 a.m. (Lorikeets love nectar–it’s available for purchase for a hands-on experience with these colorful Australian parrots.) Nature Play is another interactive spot at the Zoo to climb and explore for children of all ages.
No visit to the Palm Beach Zoo is complete without cooling down at the refreshing Fountain Plaza splash pad (remember to bring a towel!) and a slushy from the Tropics Cafe or Dippin’ Dots. Simply purchase an adult ticket online or at the gate and two children will be admitted with each adult.

Stroller Daze at the South Florida Science Center & Aquarium
August 25, 9 a.m.-Noon
You won’t want to miss taking your little ones to the South Florida Science Center in West Palm Beach for a fun-filled event just for them on August 25! “Stroller Daze” is a special morning geared toward children ages 5-and-under (and their parents) that includes age-appropriate science crafts, Planetarium shows, Discovery Center and playground exploration, giveaways and more!
The South Florida Science Center’s indoor/outdoor venue features more than 100 hands-on educational exhibits, a 10,000-gallon fresh and saltwater aquarium, digital planetarium, Pre-K focused “Discovery Center,” 18-hole conservation-themed Mini Golf Course and quarter mile long outdoor science trail.
The newest addition includes a $2.5 million permanent exhibit, “Journey Through the Human Brain,” and features the most advanced neuroscience research and technology in the world. Admission is free for children ages 5 and under and 50% off for adults and kids 6-12.

See the Boca Butterflies at Town Center at Boca Raton
Like a moth to a flame, this Boca mom is attracted to cold a/c throughout the month of August, and it’s a good thing there is also something cool to see at Town Center Mall in Boca Raton. More than 1,000 shining butterflies have “migrated” to the luxury run, extending from Bloomingdales to Saks Fifth Avenue.
Gold, rose gold, and silver butterflies of varying heights and sizes are displayed in the overhanging art installation created especially for Town Center. Trust me, your kids will marvel at them!
Shoppers are invited to take selfies and capture photo moments in front of the whimsical, one-of-a-kind art installation and share using the hashtag #BocaButterflies.
