Ditch the Construction and Enjoy WPB’s “iCONEic” Summer in Paradise

Don’t get me wrong, Boca does a great job celebrating our fair city during the summer. My family and I enjoy all of the outdoor activities in the Mizner Park Amphitheater—at least they happen after the sun goes down!

But the City of West Palm Beach is iconic —and this year during their Summer in Paradise (SIP) event lineup will be a little iCONE-ic, too.

In celebration (versus irritation) of Phase II of the Clematis Streetscape project, the city’s events team has come up with a packed roster of construction-themed events and activities. The humble orange traffic cone will instead take center stage in a fun, playful and Instagrammable way.

Check out the top 5 things to see and do during the city’s 2019 Summer in Paradise:

1. Cone-y Island

June 6 – August 1 on the Great Lawn

Open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

A maze created by nationally recognized prop master, Frank Navarrete, will be made out of construction materials with interactive play zones, shade areas and water misters on the Great Lawn. Check out the rendering (above) for what the maze could look like! Definitely unique to South Florida.

2. Cone in the Zone

Mondays to Sundays from June 9 – July 31

The Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach is hosting a summer-inspired twist on “Elf on the Shelf.” Locals are encouraged to come in and search the air conditioned stacks to locate Mr. Coney McConerson, the library’s decorated mini orange construction cone, who will be hiding in there all summer long. Find Coney, bring him to a customer service desk and win a prize. Because Elf on a Shelf once a year wasn’t enough (insert this Boca mom’s playful eye roll), snap a memory for the ‘gram and then leave this one at the library.

3. Kid’s Cone Zone

During various events from June 6 to August 1

Kids love big trucks and they cannot lie! Be sure to stay tuned into the city’s events schedule, as big City of West Palm Beach trucks and construction vehicles will be on display for kids to touch and explore. Don’t forget that snap of your little one at the wheel.

4. Cone Checkers

Through August 1 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and during special event hours

Come play checkers on a giant checker board with cones converted into checker pieces. These cones might be as big as some of your kids—definitely a cute photo opp.

5. Pop-up surprises

All summer long

Pop-ups are always Insta-worthy! Be sure to visit West Palm Beach throughout the summer to see surprise performances and the opportunity to be selected for giveaways. I’m hoping to be up there when the “Clematis Cone Heads”—a posse of cones who spread spontaneous cheer—show up.

Get out of your comfort “cone” and head up to West Palm Beach this summer, Boca parents! This promises to be be the most fun “pardon our dust” experience—and super Instagrammable. When the street is complete, that’ll be pretty IG-worthy, too, with modern pavers, wider sidewalks, a curb-less street design and more shade trees along Clematis Street.

But plan to have a super fun “Summer in Paradise” in the meantime.
