Jeannette DeOrchis was named the Woman Volunteer of the Year by the Junior League of Boca Raton at its annual awards luncheon.
The vice chair at Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA) as well as a wealth manager, DeOrchis is a survivor of domestic violence and was recognized for her advocacy for victims escaping the cycle of abuse.
“It’s a terrible feeling to be hunted down like an animal with your daughter in tow,” she told the crowd of 1,100 people at the Boca Raton Resort & Spa.
AVDA, located in Delray Beach, operates a 24-hour crisis hotline, 150-bed emergency shelter, and also provides transitional housing.
Also at the luncheon, Joan Weidenfeld was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for her work advocating for people with disabilities.
Today’s Woman Volunteer of the Year Luncheon was the Junior League of Boca Raton’s 31st and it celebrates volunteerism in the community. Fifty women from various causes were nominated and guests were treated to a welcome reception, silent auction, raffle, lunch, and a fashion show with looks by Tanya Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Boca magazine was the proud media sponsor of the luncheon.
