Joe Gillie on Old School Square’s 2012 Lecture Series

When Joe Gillie, executive director at Old School Square, books speakers for his renowned lecture series, his criteria is quite simple.

“The goal — and I work wit a lecture guild of ladies that have connections on the east and west coasts – is to look for speakers that will entertain and inform. I look at people that I think would be fun.”

The Crest Theatre recently announced 2012 lecture series, along with its mainstage and cabaret series, which are on view at Old School Square’s website. In general, Gillie says, “We try to pick someone who has to do with government or government relations or current events and someone from the entertainment industry, and then we try to do a celebrity type or literary person.”

In terms of variety and notoriety, the upcoming season’s quartet of speakers is as strong as ever. Here they are,

with along with comments from Gillie:

January 12: Jenna Bush Hager, daughter of former president George W. Bush, chairperson for UNICEF’s Next Generation initiative battling preventable childhood deaths and a contributing correspondent for NBC’s “Today Show”

“I watch ‘The Today Show’ in the morning. I see the segments Jenna Bush does. She’s established herself as someone who digs deep to find special people. The great deeds across America idea that she’s focused on is neat.”

Feb. 2: Robert “Skip” Orr, an FAU graduate, former president of Boeing international and a recent presidential appointee as ambassador to the Asian Development Bank

“He is a local boy makes good, and that has great interest. He’s recognized as one of our alumni success stories. He’ll have information we’ll be looking for about how we continue relations from Japan and how their economy will rebound from the devastating earthquakes. He’ll have a unique perspective, because he was appointment by President Obama.”

March 15: Bob Eubanks, former disc jockey, tour producer for the Beatles and Rolling Stones and host of “The Newlywed Game”

“The idea of doing Bob Eubanks came across my desk. Everybody has that fond memory of watching ‘The Newlywed Game’ and laughing at what was said. Eubanks has some great outtakes form ‘The Newlywed Game’ that he’ll be bringing.”

April 5: Steven Bogart, novelist, network news producer and the son of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall

“If you look at the American Film Institute, they named his father the top male star of all time. His mother is very reclusive, and though she did speak in the area recently [at the Society of the Four Arts], I understand she was not as illuminating. We’re all fascinated with actors and their personas outside of the public. Being the icon Humphrey was, Steven will tell you stories he won’t hear anywhere else.”
