Making the Most of your Tax Return

Are you getting a tax refund?

If so, have you thought about what you’re going to do with that money? I know many people have already gotten their refunds, but I hope you have used it wisely.  If you haven’t yet gotten yours back yet, then I urge you to consider establishing or funding an “emergency fund.”

I know it’s tempting to buy something you have been wanting and couldn’t afford. And it’s even wiser to consider paying off some debt.  However, there is a lot to be said for having the emergency fund over paying off debt.  I do realize that on a strictly financial level, the interest rate you will earn is far less than the interest rate you are paying on debt, even if you are lucky enough to have a low rate on your debt.

But, at the same time, consider the stress relief you would feel if you knew you had $1,000.00 in the bank for emergencies. You wouldn’t be worried about what to do when that unexpected car repair was necessary, or whatever other unplanned expense arises. Stress is a huge cause of many physical health issues, so I strongly urge you to consider this idea.

Most financial experts suggest having a minimum of $1,000.00 as an emergency fund.   Then, if your refund is more than that, work on paying off the smallest debt first. Once that debt is paid off, you can add that minimum monthly payment amount onto what you’re paying on another debt to reduce that debt faster. Continue doing that until your debt is paid!  I hope to one day be completely debt-free, but I’ll be happy when we reach a level of having only a mortgage as debt!  I hope you’re working to that goal as well.
