Restaurant Buffet: All the Food News You Can Use

It was a short, sad run for Nick’s Apizza in downtown Lake Worth, the stylish New Haven-style pizzeria run by transplant Nick Laudano. I was a big fan of their white clam pies but whenever I stopped by or looked in the window the place was virtually empty. Nick’s closed for the off-season late last year and briefly reopened but business was just as dead as before. Now something called Hookah Lounge is moving into the space, hoping that flavored tobaccos are more popularity than New Haven-style pizzas.

In better news from downtown Lake Worth, Dolce Vita Wines in now in their new location at 609 Lake Ave. (561/493-3330), having moved out of impossibly cramped corners a few blocks away on J Street. In taking over the site of the former Soma yoga center, the Dolce has more room for more wine, wine tastings and even a small tapas menu.

To celebrate tomatoes that actually taste like, you know. . . tomatoes, the Four Seasons Palm Beach (2800 S. Ocean Blvd., 561/582-2800) has partnered with local tomato honcho Walter Ross’ Farmhouse Tomatoes to feature his hydroponically grown heirloom fruits in a variety of dishes. Among chef Darryl Moiles creations: lobster and tomato gazpacho and purple Cherokee tomato and blue cheese salad. What I think is really cool is that the resort’s Ocean Bistro is offering a lunchtime DIY BLT menu, where you can pick from three different breads, tomatoes, bacon types, spreads and cheeses to create your very own killer sammie. With a small caprese salad it will cost you $20, and the whole tomato fest runs until June 24.

From Azul at Miami’s posh Mandarin Oriental comes word of the replacement for recently departed exec chef Clay Conley (who just opened his own Buccan in Palm Beach). He’s Joel Huff, who takes over the elegant restaurant overlooking Biscayne Bay at the end of the month. Huff’s resume is pretty impressive, having cooked with the likes of Jose Andres, Ludric Le Preve and Tetsuya Wakuda.
