Let’s face it. If you have kids in the house, you are constantly buying new clothes as they grow. However, it’s time to start thinking about buying out of season for the best prices.
I realize South Florida doesn’t have a big change in seasons, but the spring clothing lines will be coming out soon and it’s a great time to get some of the winter items on clearance. Look for clearance items one to two sizes bigger than your child currently wears, and buy ahead for next year. In addition, when you find a great sale on current seasonal clothes, considering buying it in the size you currently need, and one size bigger in order to last through the summer.
My kids always seem to grow the fastest during the summer months. Swimwear is especially difficult if they outgrow it near the end of summer when the stores are already sold out of swimwear, or the prices are high due to having to shop at a specialty store. So, consider which item(s) may be helpful to buy two sizes of now, before summer begins.
A grocery budget topic I wanted to discuss today is the importance of a price comparison list. When I first began my “couponing” journey, I created a spreadsheet listing items I regularly bought and the prices at the stores I preferred to shop. I tried to include regular price and sale price. I seem to have gotten away from that, since I now have a general idea as to the prices. But every once in a while I wish I still had my price notebook.
In fact, I will be creating an updated list over the next few weeks as I shop. This can really help you if you prefer to pay cash at the store, as you will be better able to determine how much cash to take with you. And, it helps you to be confident that you are getting the best deal. It’s also important to track in your book the size of the item and figure out the price per unit.
For example, is a 6-roll pack of toilet paper a better deal at Store “A”, or is the 36-roll pack at the warehouse store the better deal? Is the 24 oz. jar at Store “A” a better deal than the 36 oz. jar at Store “B?” Having the price per unit will help you determine that very quickly. It’s also important to keep this list current as prices do change fairly frequently. I include the date that price was found on my spreadsheet as well so I know how current the pricing is.
