Since they opened Table 26 in 2012, owners/partners Eddie Schmidt and Ozzie Medeiros haven’t stopped trying new things. They are known for their consistent participation in local charities (wonderful wine dinners, for example), and for the food they serve. It’s all tasty, innovative, well prepared and well plated.
Now Executive Chef Amit Jain has overseen the re-invention of the Happy Hour bar menu, and we’re putting it on our to-go list. At a media try-and-nibble night, we tasted the handcrafted cocktails and the small plates making their debut at the 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Happy Hours.
Some of the new cocktails (all $10) include the Maple Pisco Sour (Kappa Pisco, maple syrup, lemon, bitters; not too sweet, nice bubbly foam on the aftertaste; a sigh-worthy drink) and the Bees Knees (pictured: St. George “Botanivore” gin, lemon, sage-infused honey, with a sage leaf; not sweet, just yummy).
Dishes run the gamut from BBQ pork sliders to ginger-glazed calamari, drunken clams (with venison sausage, preserved lemon, beer broth), a cheese board (pictured at top, with chef’s selection cheeses and accouterments), to steak tartare and a mini mac & cheese. Prices from $4 (veggie spring rolls) to $12.
The sliders have pulled pork with a fig barbecue sauce and a house slaw. In case you haven’t noticed, fig is the new trend, and is served with everything. In this case, it was a good taste and texture combo.
For dessert, we kept it simple: the pumpkin pie martini (pictured). This seasonal special is surprisingly not too sweet, but just right and a great way to end a meal. It’s made with Crop Organic spiced pumpkin vodka, rum chata and pumpkin puree. Oh, and graham cracker crumbs on the rim. Of course.
Table 26, named for the latitude of Palm Beach, is on our map for many things, and the new Happy Hour menu has been added to the list. (1700 S. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach; 561/855-2660)
Important note to remember: The summer special at Table 26 is still running through Nov. 16. This means from 5 to 6 p.m. each day, you can order the entrees for half price. This is definitely one of those deals that’s worth it. We like that definition of summer special!
