Small Bites: Tasty Tidbits of Restaurant News

Satisfying your jones for an authentic Philly cheesesteak just got a little easier with the debut of the fourth local Big Al’s Steaks (11290 Legacy Ave., 561-866-7516) at Legacy Place in Palm Beach Gardens. Along with the sammies that are “Big Al” Costilo and sons’ signature, you can get ribeye sliders, ham and turkey hoagies, ice cream shakes and, now, bottled beer. Bottom’s up.

It looks like the end of the line for Mambo Italiano’s, the casual Italian joint that opened only a few months ago on Clematis in West Palm. The windows are papered over and a sign says the restaurant is temporarily closed for maintenance, which is often another way of saying, We’re outta here! Mambo’s phone number still gets a recording asking callers to leave a message but the inbox is full. So you make the call.

In the Well, That was Quick Department, Jamie DeRosa, opening chef at the new Atlantic Ocean Club (217 E. Atlantic Ave., 561/450-7557) in Delray, has already left the building. DeRosa, you may recall, was also chef at the short-lived and ill-fated Taste Gastropub, that crashed and burned in record time despite the involvement of Mango Ganger Allen Susser. Former sous chef Lisa Odom is now top toque, adding menu items like tempura calamari with olives, Marcona almonds and spicy mustard, and duck two ways: honey-glazed duck breast with pistachios and arugula duck salad.
