Stoneman Douglas Shooting: Blood Donors Needed

The staff of Boca magazine was sitting in a meeting when the news broke that a gunman was at large at Stoneman Douglas High School in nearby Parkland. Like everyone else in the community, we were glued to our computers and phones for updates.

We’re horrified and devastated of the news that 17 lives were taken on Wednesday.

At the moment, we’re hearing the most immediate way to help is to donate blood. OneBlood, our state’s local blood center, is putting out a call for blood donations to replenish their supply, and centers are especially in need of O- blood. Appointments are preferred. Click here to find the closest blood bank to you.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, a blood drive is being hosted Thursday from noon to 7 p.m. at Cox Media, 2741 N 29th Ave. in Hollywood.

The FBI is also asking the public for information related to the shooting. If you have any tips, click here or call 1-800-CALL-FBI.

Stoneman Douglas students can visit grief counselors at the following locations:

  • Pine Trails Park Recreation Center and Amphitheater, 10555 Trails End in Parkland
  • Coral Springs Gymnasium, 2501 Coral Springs Drive in Coral Springs
  • Coral Springs Center For The Arts, 2855 Coral Springs Drive in Coral Springs

Finally, anyone feeling overwhelmed by the tragedy is reminded to call 211, a helpline for people in crisis.
