The Green Goddess, Vol. 10

Early June means the start of two seasons in South Florida—summer travel and hurricane preparedness. Both require plenty of planning, especially if you’re intent on eating healthy. Here are a few suggestions for supplies that work just as well on the road (or in the air) as they do at home after the electricity goes out.

Stay hydrated: When flying, many people experience dry skin and slight swelling due to cabin pressure and low humidity. To counter this, I suggest bringing oranges and bananas on your flight. Their high potassium content will help regulate fluids in your body, as well as provide vitamins and antioxidants that can boost your immune system on crowded flights. Also, these fruits have a thick peel that makes them easy to transport and eat. If you are stocking up for a hurricane, these are great to have on hand as well since there is no hand-washing needed.

Get your greens on: Dark leafy greens may be hard to find as pre-hurricane supplies dwindle during a storm watch. If you need a nutritional boost, stock up on energy bars with greens. One of my favorite is the chocolate-covered Greens + CHIA bar at Whole Foods on Glades Road or online. This bar has great flavor, it is full of immune-system boosting nutrients and it has chocolate!

Fill up on carbs: Stay away from airport pretzels and potato chips, and instead try Mary’s Gone Crackers. These are my favorite-tasting brown rice crackers, and they are filled with good carbohydrates and healthy fats.

Not all jerky is created equal: Did you know that flying can affect your digestive system? Sometimes, in such cases, animal protein can be too hard for the body to process. I recommend buying individual packs of non-GMO soy jerky. They come in easy-to-peel individual packs, and they don’t require refrigeration. Soy jerky actually tastes good (my favorite flavor is the Hickory Smoked); they are full of protein and their texture is very close to the texture of meat.

What to drink: Because of the limitations involving liquids brought onto flights, I suggest getting a refillable, filtered Brita water bottle with you. I bring one with me every time I travel and fill it up at a nearest water fountain once I pass the security gate. The great thing about this bottle is that it is reusable, and the water comes out cleaner than the one in plastic bottles.
