The Olive Tap Puts Olive Oil (and More) on Tap

The foodie’s version of a kid in a candy store has just landed in CityPlace with the debut last week of The Olive Tap (701 E. Rosemary, West Palm Beach, 561/651-1110), a smart-looking little shop dispensing more extra-virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars than you can shake a whisk at.

Lined up like soldiers in gleaming 12-liter stainless steel canisters are a dozen extra-virgin olive oils, imported from as near as California and as far as Italy, Spain, Greece and Morocco. Another 14 infused oils are on display, flavored with everything from herbs and citrus to chilies and garlic. A 375 ml. bottle will set you back about 15 bucks.

Sixteen different balsamic vinegars, all from the balsamic vinegar capital of Modena, Italy, are also offered, both straight and flavored, aged from 12 to 18 years. Infusions include fig, cherry, peach and-no kidding-chocolate. (I gotta try that one.) Prices range from $15 to $18 for 375 ml.
The best part, though, is that every oil and vinegar is available for tasting. Just twist the spigot on the canisters and dribble a bit into a tiny paper cup. Then try to walk out without buying something.

The family-run chainlet has five stores in the Midwest, says local proprietor Cheryl Emery, with the CityPlace shop the first venture in South Florida. She admitted it was a little scary opening in such a down economy said the store’s “unique” products and appeal to everyone from “novice cooks to master chefs” will keep the place afloat.

Along with the olive oils and balsamic vinegars, whose supply will change with the season and availability, The Olive Tap also dishes olives, salsas, sea salts, soaps and even lotions. They do gift baskets too.

It’s cool little place, definitely worth checking out.
