Steven Sheiner was highly nearsighted as a child, and yearly eye exams were essential to manage his poor vision and quality of life. “Every year, my prescription got worse. I was fascinated by it and wanted to learn more. I became an optometrist to help other young patients because when I was a kid there was nothing to help slow it down,” he explains. “Now there is.”
“In this era of technology and COVID, kids spend hours each day staring at devices, and myopia (nearsightedness) is accelerating quickly. If left unchecked and untreated, when these kids become adults, serious eye problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachments
and myopic macular degeneration can develop,” he says.“I’m excited to offer kids a solution to slow down the progression of their myopia and protect their eyes in the future.”
There are a number of myopia treatment options based on a child’s age, prescription, and other factors, but Dr. Sheiner and his staff make it easy to get started. From initial consultation, treatment can often be achieved the same day.
“We experience so much of the world through our eyes that protecting these vital organs just makes good sense,” Dr. Sheiner says, stressing the importance of yearly eye exams for everyone.
Dr. Sheiner lives in Boca with his wife and two sons, and is also a published novelist of suspense thrillers.
