Blogger’s note: I wrote my original humorous poem about the week before Christmas in Boca in 2019, but couldn’t resist publishing a timely update after the crazy year we’ve had. Wishing you and your family a safe and healthy holiday and a very happy 2021!
‘Twas the week before Christmas, and all through Boca Raton, every local mom was multitasking, shopping (only) on her phone. For once, the calendar wasn’t packed with events every night and our stretchy pants were still feeling alright. Creating holiday magic in 2020 is a lot to take on! But that’s what we do, after all we’re resilient Boca moms.
They say we’re supposed to “savor the moments” with our kids, big and small. But that’s easier said than done when you’re decking the halls. It’s so easy to overcompensate this time of year. And side note, while I’m at it, can it please get cooler down here? It’s way more pleasant to socially distance outdoors when it’s below 75. But with a pandemic afoot, maybe I’ll opt for a scenic drive…
So this year, how can you keep holiday traditions alive when you can’t even give Santa Claus a high five? That annual photo in 2020 doesn’t get a pass! Even if it’s with a mask and behind Plexiglas. At least there’s no waiting with online Santa appointments these days. Yep, living in Boca Raton really pays.
Now don’t forget about teacher gifts and Zoom holiday parties galore! And why is moving that elf still such a chore? Add private movie screenings, light displays and gift shipping deadlines to your plate. It’s no wonder you’ve booked your therapist for a virtual date.
Sure, it’s supposedly the most wonderful time of year! But don’t be too hard on yourself, mama, if you shed a tear. We’re all doing our best in 2020 to make special memories for the fam. (Wait!!! Don’t forget to get curbside pickup for the Christmas ham!)
Keep breathing (wear your mask!) and give yourself grace. Even if you’re coping by stuffing your face. Because our kids won’t remember the crappy year that we had. They’ll only recall they were loved by mom and dad. Enjoy your children this season and hold everyone in your immediate household tight. Happy Holidays Boca Raton and to 2020…GOOD BYE!
