There’s no doubt it’s a good year to be a fan of standup comedy. After spending last year working out material in newly reopened comedy clubs, some of the biggest names in the art form have been hitting the road for the first time since COVID. One of the most anticipated returns to the standup scene is comedian, actor and former SNL writer John Mulaney, who will be performing at Hard Rock Hollywood this Friday and Saturday.
It’s no secret that John Mulaney had a rough go of the pandemic. He’s spoken candidly about his divorce, as well as his struggles with alcohol and drug abuse that he sought treatment for last year. Now, freshly sober and having just welcomed into the world his first child with actress Olivia Munn, Mulaney is touring with new material drawn from overcoming a year of deeply personal hardships.
While Mulaney’s past comedy tours featured material ranging from the absurd to the acerbic, “From Scratch” is a candid dive into his personal life and struggles, offering a glimpse past the naive, bright-eyed charm to which audiences have grown accustomed and seeing a side of him that is more vulnerable and intimate. At its heart, “From Scratch” is a new beginning forged from the rubble of grief.
While the threat of COVID has been reduced from a roar to a whimper, many of us are still struggling to adjust after a time of such heightened anxiety. There’s something to be said for watching someone comedically relate their pandemic woes in a way that helps us face our own with laughter. If you’re already a John Mulaney fan, or are just looking for some hilarious catharsis, check him out this weekend, May 13 and 14 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
