Sometimes we Boca ladies just have to get away! That’s how my 8 year-old daughter and I felt after a hurried (and jam-packed) month back-to-school this year. But with air travel off the table due to school health regulations, it has been an ongoing mission for me to find the best, family-friendly (yet drivable) destinations to have fun and relax. Enter the newly-renovated Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Florida!
When I’m traveling solo with my child, I tend to gravitate toward resorts where I can park my car and enjoy myself for a few days right on property, with no driving necessary. The Diplomat just happens to be one of those hotels with tons of fun all in one place—a killer pool, beautiful beaches and great dining options. Currently, not everything is open #AtTheDip due to the pandemic, but there is enough to keep everyone busy and happy for a weekend.
The Diplomat renovated its lobby and all 1,000 guestrooms and suites just before the pandemic, so expect to stay in a beautiful (thoroughly and professionally cleaned) mid-century contemporary oasis. Spring for an ocean view room with a private balcony if you can! It’s very spacious and features a gracious lounge area, free Wi-Fi access and a large TV complete with Google Chromecast, which, if you have kids, you know comes in handy for streaming content from your phone. A relaxing tub allows you the opportunity to soak in the sunset, or more realistically, bathe your sandy kids after the pool and beach. There’s also a separate glass enclosed shower with C.O. Bigelow products.
Pools & Beaches
Speaking of the pool and beach, The Diplomat actually has two large swimming pools and a splash pad/waterslide area called Dip + Slide (with a lifeguard during open hours).
The pools are especially unique as they’re located on two different levels with the top infinity pool featuring a glass oculus where swimmers can see straight down to the lower pool. We had some fun with that!
Guests #AtTheDip can also reserve private cabanas during their stay. If you have younger children, we highly recommend requesting yours next to the waterslide—because that’s where your kids will be hanging out most of the day, trust me! These poolside cabanas offer chaise loungers, a small SMEG refrigerator with bottled water, TV, unlimited towels, Trina Turk™ curated interior furnishings and dining and drink service from their beachfront restaurant, Playa. It’s a handy place to escape the frequent, but fast, Florida rain showers too. You can even request a children’s crib or pack-and-play if you need one!
As for the beach, one chair per person is included with your resort fee, as is one hour of any non-motorized water sport. There’s something special about being able to just pop down to the beach and back up to the pool at your leisure. Plus, it really tires out the kids in time for dinner.
On our first night #AtTheDip, my daughter Avery and I splurged on dinner at Diplomat Prime, which is a luxury boutique steakhouse from seasoned Executive Chef Rashaad Abdool. It features dry-aged steaks along with local, seasonal seafood dishes (Avery had the lobster mac & cheese), classic cocktails and an extensive wine list. Their private dining options look even more impressive—take note!
For breakfast, we really loved Counter Point, which is known for their coffee, pastries and healthy salads and sandwiches. Wine, beer and light bites are available later in the afternoon as well, making it a handy place for dining (or take-away) any time of day. You can even skip the line by placing your order ahead directly from your room (there’s a QR code located right on the desk).
If you’re looking for a new staycation destination nearby (it is located only 40 minutes from Boca Raton), I highly recommend adding The Diplomat Beach Resort to your shortlist. My daughter and I felt entertained, well-fed, relaxed, and most of all, very safe due to how spacious and open the property is. There really is something for every member of your family #AtTheDip.
