Extracurricular Activities for the Littlest Members of Your Boca Family

I get local parenting questions on my Modern Boca Mom Facebook page constantly. But, one of the most frequent is about group classes and activities to occupy the 2- to 4 year-old set. If you are a parent with older children, you’ll recall this age range (vaguely) as the one that has so much energy you have no idea what to do with them; daily…hourly. It’s a real challenge!

If you’ve enrolled your little one in preschool this year, then at least you’ve got most of the weekdays (or at the very least—mornings) covered. But what about those afternoons and weekends? They can seem endless sometimes…

I’ve compiled some of my favorite extracurricular activities in Boca Raton below targeted especially for preschoolers. They might just save your sanity this school year!

Baby Ballet & Creative Movement at Organic Movements

The author’s little ballerina

Ballet classes start at age 2.5 and fill up quickly at Organic Movements, but it is one of my favorite places in town for kids! Baby Ballet is designed to help your little one transition from “Mommy & Me” to a more independent setting of dance instruction. Kids will learn to see themselves as independent movers as they dance, play and sing. Creative Movement builds on the basic concepts of dance and classical ballet, and children are encouraged to use their imagination as they develop coordination, grace, flexibility, stability and confidence. This dance school primarily focuses on technique throughout the year with a final performance in May for families. 2400 NW Boca Raton Blvd. #12, Boca Raton; 561/395-6111; organicmovements.com

Kidokinetics at Sugar Sand Park

Sugar Sand Park

Ideally for kids ages 2 to 5, Kidokinetics is the “fun way to fitness!” Through these classes, your child will be exposed to a new sport every week in a fun and non-competitive atmosphere. Activities include soccer, hockey, tennis, basketball, volleyball, Frisbee, golf, hula hoops, obstacle course, t-ball and more. Classes are led by experienced coaches in a fun and safe environment. It’s a great way to get their energy o-u-t. 300 S. Military Trail, Boca Raton; 561/347-3900; kidokinetics.com

Kidz on Stage at Showtime Performing Arts Theatre

The author with her daughter after a performance at Showtime

This group acting program starts at age 3 and meets every Saturday at 10 a.m. My daughter has been taking classes at Showtime Performing Arts since age 4 and she absolutely loves it. Each session is themed (Aladdin is coming up for fall 2019!) and your little one will learn how to sing, dance and perform on the Showtime stage after just 12 weeks. It’s pretty adorable and really helps build your tiny actor’s stage presence and confidence in front of big groups. 503 SE Mizner Blvd. Boca Raton; 561/394-2626; showtimeboca.com

COBRA Minis at Sugar Sand Park

Looking to expose your little one to the wild world of sports? COBRA Minis aims to teach children the basic motor skills necessary to play organized team sports…eventually. The program, offered on certain days after school and on Sundays, focuses on elementary sports mechanics without the threat of competition or (Boca parents’) fear of getting hurt. Designed for children ages 3 to 5, COBRA Minis offers basketball, soccer and baseball. Once your child turns 4, football and golf are also offered. It’s never too early, in my opinion, to start laying the positive foundation of teamwork! 300 S. Military Trail, Boca Raton; 561/347-3900; sugarsandpark.org
