Mario’s to be Reborn in University Commons

A cat with his nine lives has nothing on Tony Bova, whose restaurant mini-empire folded two years ago after then-partner and Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein got nailed by the fuzz.

First he opened Vivo Partenza at the old Bova Ristorante site on Glades Road in Boca. Now, with the demise of McCormick & Schmick’s seafood eatery in Boca’s University Commons complex, he’s slated to open the sequel to his once-popular Mario’s Italian Restaurant in the expansive indoor-outdoor space sometime this summer.

Bova reportedly isn’t talking, but word is the reborn Mario’s will reprise the original’s signature dishes, including the still-talked-about garlic rolls.

Though the local dining scene and South Florida in general is thick with moderately priced Southern Italian-esque restaurants—more refined versions of the classic “red sauce joints”—betting against Bova on this one probably isn’t a very smart move.
