A rock legend is returning to South Florida in a few days, but not for the reason you might expect.
The Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, known for his percussion prowess and a career in music that spans over 50 years, will be showcasing a different talent in South Florida this week. Hart will be displaying his artwork at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Wentworth Gallery on Friday, November 22nd, and at the Town Center Mall Wentworth Gallery on Saturday, November 23rd.
Though Hart is best known for his work with the Grateful Dead, he has explored other outlets for years, branching out into fields such as literature, visual art, and science. Since 2015, Hart has performed with Dead & Company, the most recent spin-off of the original Grateful Dead lineup that has proved so enduring.
The three-time grammy award winner’s art shows will be open briefly at each Wentworth location to preview an upcoming solo exhibition at the Coral Springs Museum of Art that will open in March of 2020.
Hart’s unique artwork is inspired by the sounds and vibrations of making music– a natural progression for the lifelong musician. His work is often as surreal as some of his spaciest drum parts, and has proved to be a fulfilling outlet for the drummer late in his career.
Hart explained the motivations behind his artwork in a press release ahead of the exhibitions: “These visual representations from my sonic-driven world are snapshots into the music I am making. The basis of all life is vibratory, from the cosmos to human organism to the rhythms of nature and the music that come from what we make, from what we call culture. These are the worlds of rhythm that envelop us on a daily basis. Understanding these rhythms is essential in our daily lives. These works have been drummed, vibrated into existence. This technique is essential in the creation of my art.”
Mickey Hart will be making personal appearances at both Wentworth Gallery shows this weekend.
