‘Tis a shame. Last evening my wife and I went to catch the early movie at Mizner Park’s Sunrise Cinemas. We were intent on seeing “The King’s Speech,” a movie many of our friends raved about. After parking, we headed toward the theatre only to run directly into friends who told us the “joint” was locked up, closed, OOB. Although it was rumored that the rent had not been paid to the mall’s owner, General Growth, I couldn’t believe that they would pull the cork at the height of the season.

Well they did, and now the east side of Boca Raton is absent a movie venue. What a shame. I predict there has to be some plan to find an operator for this site as it complements Mizner Park’s outstanding restaurants.

Speaking of restaurants, we stopped at Racks (402 Plaza Real, 561/395-1662) to drown our sorrows and sample the delicious menu. The tuna tacos are over the top, and I highly recommend the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. It’s better than Mom’s.

And speaking of food, specifically Italian (as if there aren’t enough Italian restaurants in the Boca area), you must try Amante Italian Cuisine/Bob’s Pizza in Deerfield Beach directly across from the ever popular Whales’ Rib. The pizza is outstanding with a capital “O”—thin crust with any topping your heart desires. In addition, chef Bob offers Sicilian deep dish pizzas, calzones and strombolis.

For starters, the mussels marinara is a keeper, and the eggplant rollantini (a dish I try at all Italian establishments and one of the restaurant’s featured pastas)—bathed in an ethereal tomato sauce over thin slices of eggplant stuffed with ricotta cheese and then baked—is very good. The menu at Amante (2068 N.E. Second St.; 954/426-1030)—with its many veal, chicken and pasta dishes—is extensive, but you can count on a truly Italian experience at this family restaurant, which has been in business since 1975.
