It’s Friday night, the end of a long work week. For days, temperatures have been hovering in the high 90s, the sky is white, and we are all trying valiantly to pretend we are not in a Tennessee Williams’ play.
And then some of us wise up and go to Nantucket. In West Palm Beach.
This summer through October 1, Top of the Point, the sky-high dining venue at Phillips Point (which used to be the Governor’s Club) is taking foodies on a culinary journey through America’s most flavorful regions. Each week, the restaurant, led by its culinary team Bill Lalor and Chef Brian Schuyler, features a menu inspired by cool places with remarkable food cultures. The week I chose spotlighted Nantucket – and offered a three-course feast for $39.50, accompanied by one of the best views in Palm Beach County.
This is a Breakers restaurant now, and might be the best kept secret in our area. You overlook the city and the island of Palm Beach and the ocean beyond; the service is impeccable; Chef Schuyler is gifted, a veteran of L’Escalier, among other great restaurants.
And then there’s the Nantucket part.
My friend and I started with a green gazpacho that was the best gazpacho I have ever tasted—cool and smooth and understated. We tried the day boat cod and farm corn chowder, as well as the steamers. The chef sent us a plate of roasted royal trumpet mushrooms with fontina and Parmesan, as well as octopus a la plancha – all smoky with Catalan salad and paprika and pequillo peppers. We had the sauteed summer fluke, and a steamed two-pound lobster.
We were on the Cape. There were whaling ships. We were practically in sweaters up there.
I am not our food critic but I know enough to know this place has ramped it up several notches in the past year, and it is don’t-miss dining with a great view. It is normally expensive, but the Road Trip menus are reasonable – and fun. Here’s what’s coming up. Give it a whirl…I’ll probably see you in New Orleans.
