With the holiday season just around the corner, those looking for ways to give back have an opportunity with a local food bank.

CROS Ministries is in need of more volunteers to help with cooking, food prep, food deliveries, and other tasks. It’s a part of its Caring Kitchen program, which brings hot meals to homebound seniors and people with disabilities five days a week. New volunteers would service those living in Delray Beach, specifically the 33444, 33445, 33446, 33483, and 33484 zip codes.

With cuts to funding for food assistance, volunteers are more vital than ever.

Volunteer opportunities include:

  • Homebound Delivery Driver: Monday or Wednesday, 9 to 11 a.m. Routes include up to 20 meal deliveries in east or west Delray Beach. Volunteers must possess a valid Florida driver’s license and have an acceptable DMV driving record. A tour, ride-along, and background check are required.
  • Cook: Monday or Thursday, 8 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Food Prep: Tuesday or Friday, 8 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Van Driver: Wednesday or Thursday, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Volunteers would drive an agency vehicle to pick up donations and supplies. Must be 21+ with valid Florida driver’s license, have an acceptable DMV driving record, and be able to repeatedly lift 10 pounds or more.

Shona Castillo, director of the Caring Kitchen program, said in a press release that she receives calls every day from people looking to be a part of the program. With more volunteers, as well as extra funding, CROS Ministries is hoping to be able to serve 30 more individuals and to expand its reach into east Boca Raton.
