If dreams of ripe, sweet, flavorful tomatoes have been keeping you up nights, now you can finally get some rest.
Walter Ross, the man behind the incredibly flavorful heirloom tomatoes grown by his Farmhouse Tomatoes in Delray and Lake Worth, is now selling this year’s crop at the West Palm Beach and Boca Raton GreenMarkets. The earlier-ripening Cherokee Purples are most prevalent, but as the season wears on look for Brandywines and Gold Medals and Ross’s newest product, heirloom cherry tomatoes he calls “Baby -Looms.” And by this weekend, Farmhouse tomatoes should be Whole Foods and Fresh Market.
At $4/lb. at the GreenMarkets and $5 to $6/lb. at grocers, Farmhouse tomatoes aren’t the cheapest around, and you can certainly pay less for the plasticene orbs being peddled at your local giantsupermegamarket, but then you wouldn’t have something that actually tastes like a, you know. . . tomato.
Which is kind of the point, don’t you think?
