86’d: the Restaurant Dead Pool

The Grim Reaper has paid a visit to a trio of local establishments lately, just another reminder that the restaurant biz is neither for the faint of heart nor the faint of wallet.

Though it caused quite a splash when it opened several years ago as one of PBC’s first haute Mexican eateries, Moquila fell upon hard times as of late. And now the Boca Raton restaurant is history, with a “Restaurant Available” and tax lien notice posted on the windows. I haven’t eaten there in quite awhile, but last time I was there the food was still good and margaritas exceptionally bracing. Adios, Moquila. . .

Also gone belly up in Boca is Sammy K’s Grille, which occupied the same Bermuda Triangle spot in Royal Palm Place that once housed Tulio’s and Chow. Actually, “occupied” might be something of a stretch. I received an email from someone who said they worked at Sammy K’s and that business was so slow the owner shut it down after only 12 days, which has to be some kind of record, though not one you’d want to brag too much about.

Finally, not a restaurant but a family-run market, Sweet Greens in Palm Beach Gardens, has found business neither very sweet nor producing enough green. Open less than a year, it too is now gone. Sometimes the grass isn’t greener no matter which side of the street you’re on.
